There are quite a number of games that consist only of cards and those are hot right now. So what did Gamewright Games do? They went ahead and flipped it, and produced a game that consists only of dice. The crazy, beautiful fools.

So who is the eponymous ‘Rory’? No idea. But his ‘Story Cubes’ are nine dice with symbols representing things on the faces (so 54 different symbols in total). The symbols are things like: a castle; a plane; a house; a keyhole; a bee; the moon, and so on.

And how do you use them? Well you roll them, and then make up and tell a story that’s inspired by the symbols.

And for how long will I keep asking myself questions and then answering them? That’s it, I’m done!

Pedants will quickly point out that Rory’s Story Cubes stretch the definition of a ‘game’: there’s no objective and no winner. So yeah, it’s storytelling with prompts, or to put it in Gamewright Games’ words, it’s a ‘pocket-sized creative story generator.’ Despite its lack of gameyness though, Rory’s Story Cubes manage to be very awesome: the cubes provide just enough structure to spark the imagination, making them the kind of thing that can entertain kids for countless peaceful hours on long car trips and suchlike. Kids will enjoy them from age three and up.
